People fail to get along because they fear each other; they fear each other because they don’t know each other; they don’t know each other because they have not communicated with each other.
— Martin Luther King Jr.
Communication plays a pivotal role in human
life. Speech has distinguished man from the rest of the animal kingdom.
One can clearly express his thoughts or opinions via the medium of
communication. However, the real art of communication isn’t limited to
skilful articulation of words rather the more prized attribute is that
of listening. To conceive what the other expresses, is highly desirable
& looked upon as a gesture of respect and reception.
It is thus, very important to master the art
of listening. If one knows how to listen intently, one gets to the root
of the whole matter instantaneously. Pure attention is the requisite
for effective listening. A person with a humble and liberal disposition
alone is capable of efficacious listening. It is not difficult at all
for such a person to penetrate his own layers of formulations, pre
conceptions and opinions.
He doesn’t allow his own conditioning & pride formulate as an obstacle for deeper understanding.
For truth can only be conceived in realms of holistic attention.[Hans, D.]
Unattended listening does gross harm to an
individual. One of the main reasons for the success of any propaganda is
the repetition of ideas/beliefs that are not carefully scrutinised by
the listeners. Hence, without accountable results and rationale, a lie
is formulated as a truth through mere successive repetition.
In a revolutionary instance, the mind that
listens attentively is so engrossed in the present moment that the
chattering noise of its unsolicited thoughts are silenced without any
effort.
The greater the intensity of listening, the greater is the silence, and that silence is then not broken by noise. [Krishnamurti, J. ‘Life Ahead’]
There is tremendous beauty in witnessing
this transition from untamed random thoughts to a calm and
unflustered disposition. Such is the beauty of silence. It is no
coincidence that the words SILENT and LISTEN contain the same alphabets.
They coexist in an exquisite tandem.
And what else can be more comprehensive than a wise person who speaks only when he has something to say! [Plato]
